ICC U19 World Cup: Pakistan beat Afghanistan by 109 runs

BUDERIM, Australia (TheSportsNext) August 11, 2012: Gutsy half centuries by Babar Azam and Mohammad Nawaz eased Pakistan U19 cricket team into a 109 runs victory over Afghanistan U19 in their opening match of the 2012 ICC U19 World Cup at John Blanck Oval in Buderim on Saturday.



 

Opening batsman Babar Azam scored 75 runs from 103 balls hitting seven boundaries and Mohammad Nawaz hit 66 from just 50 balls with the help of seven fours and a six while Umar Waheed also played for his 43 not out from 44 balls as Pakistan scored 253 runs for 6 wickets from their 50 overs.

For Afghanistan, Sayed Shirzad grabbed two wickets for 43 runs while Yamin Ahmadzai captured two wickets for 54 runs.

Chasing the daunting task, Afghanistan U19 were bowled out for only 144 runs from the first ball of 45th over, thus falling 109 runs short of their target.

Hashmatulla Shaidi (50 from 77 – 3 fours) did put up some fight with a half century but rest of the batsmen couldn’t compliment him as their chase never looked on.

Zia ul Haq captured four scalps for just 30 runs while Zafar Gohar took two wickets for 25 runs for Pakistan U19 cricket team.

Babar Azam was declared Man of the Match for his match-winning effort with the bat as the young opener held the innings together and made important partnership possible with Imam ul Haq besides providing a perfect launching pad for the middle order to go for a flurry of boundaries towards the end.

In other matches on opening day of the 2012 ICC U19 World Cup, Australia defeated England by six wickets with 89 balls to spare, Bangladesh stunned Sri Lanka by 25 runs, while Zimbabwe mauled sorry Papua New Guinea by 104 runs.
