(TheSportsNext) September 9, 2012: South Africa took first blood in the
three-match Twenty20 International series Saturday when they defeated England
by seven wickets at Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street.
Victory was attributed mainly to cool innings by right-hand
batsman Jacques Kallis (48*) and left-hand batsman JP Duminy (47*) after South
African bowlers restricted England to 118 for seven from 20 overs.
England’s right-arm fast bowler Jade Dernbach (2/31) scared
the Proteas early in the innings with a great combination of fast and slower
deliveries getting rid of Richard Levi (8) and skipper AB de Villiers (10). Faf
du Plessis (4) also failed to prove his worth in the team and South Africa
looked in trouble at three for 29 after four overs.
Robin Peterson (2/27) and Johan Botha (2/19) did marvelous
job with the ball for the Proteas but star of the show was fast bowler Dale
Steyn who once again exhibited a great spell of fast bowling taking a wicket
for 13 runs from his four overs.
In reply, the visitors achieved the target from 19 overs,
thanks to unbeaten 90-run partnership between Kallis and Duminy.
Dale Steyn was declared Man of the Match for his hostile
bowling spell of 4-0-13-1.
The second Twenty20 International between the two sides will
be played on Monday at Old Trafford in Manchester.
