India U19 clinch ICC U19 World Cup 2012 title

TOWNSVILLE, Australia (TheSportsNext) August 26, 2012: Indian young cricketers clinched the ICC U19 World Cup 2012 title on Sunday when opening batsman Unmukt Chand scored an unbeaten century to defeat Australia U19 at Tony Ireland Stadium in Townsville.

 

Australia U19 scored 225 for 8 from their 50 overs while India chased down the target from 47.4 overs as Unmukt Chand (111*) and Smit Patel (62*) joined forces in 130-run fifth wicket partnership to steal the victory.

Earlier, Aussie skipper William Bosisto (87) and AJ Turner (43) helped Australia to undo their top-order batting woes to give them a respectable total. Sandeep Sharma grabbed four wickets for 54 runs to dent Aussie innings right till the end.

India were looking in a spot of bother when they lost four wickets for 97 runs on the board but Unmukt Chand and Smit Patel guided them to the all-important victory.

Unmukt Chand was declared Man of the Match for his match-winning effort with the bat in the final of the ICC U19 World Cup 2012 while Australian captain William Bosisto was name Player of the Tournament.
