Sri Lanka Cricket bans noisy vuvuzelas

Press Release

COLOMBO (TheSportsNext) July 29, 2012: The Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), on Sunday, announced a ban on the noisy portable hooters and horns brought to the stadium by spectators with an immediate effect.

The SLC said in a press release issued Sunday, “Sri Lanka Cricket arrived at this decision to generally safeguard spectator comfort inside spectator areas of the stadium”.

“This does not mean that the papare bands are banned. These are individual horns brought in by the spectators,” the statement added.

Former Australian captain Tony Greig had earlier demanded a ban on these noisy hooters. Tony Greig wrote on his Twitter page, “Vuvuzelas and horns should be banned from all Sri Lankan cricket grounds as they are in Australia. All they produce is noise. Bands fine”.

Following the ban by the SLC, Tony wrote, “Thanks for all the support on banning vuvuzelas viewers asking us to turn down TV effects”.

Sri Lankan and Indian cricket teams are in the middle of their One Day International seris where the touring India are leading by 2-1 after three matches. The fourth match is scheduled at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Tuesday.

The Sri Lanka Cricket said, “We will be implementing this rule on Tuesday”.

“The public are warned that the security personnel will search for the above items very strictly and will confiscate the item if found on the spectator”, the statement added.
