(TheSportsNext) July 30, 2012: American female swimmer Dana Vollmer created
history on Sunday when she won the women’s 100 meters butterfly gold medal with
an impressive world record at the London2012.
Dana Vollmer completed the 100 meters butterfly heat in a
record 55.98 seconds to leave her Chinese opponent Lu Ying sweating in the
waters at Aquatics Center in London.
The American swimmer, who last year won the world swimming
title, overwhelmed the previous world record of 56.06 seconds made by Sarah
Sjostrom of Sweden on July 27, 2009 at the Rome World Championships 2009.
Dana Vollmer has been in tremendous form off-late and a
world record at London 2012 looked around the corner all summer long but the American swimmer
chose the biggest stage to achieve the glory as she was third at the turn but
used all of her experience, speed and skills to beat everyone else and the
previous world record in style. Vollmer defeated Lu by 89-hundredth of a
second.
Lu Ying was also trailing at fourth at the turn but acquired
good bit of velocity to finish the heat in 56.87 seconds while Alicia Coutts of
Australia, who was languishing at the last place at the turn also showed great
character and strong nerves to finish third with 56.94 seconds time.
The former world record hold Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden ended fourth
while Jeanette Ottesen Gray of Denmark, who was leading at the turn had to content
with sixth position.
