Australia vs South Africa: Brisbane Test, 1st day review

By Adrian Meredith

MELBOURNE, Australia (TheSportsNEXT) November 9, 2012: The opening day of the Brisbane Test started with two shocks - South Africa didn't play Imran Tahir, instead going in with an all-pace attack, with Rory Kleinveldt making his debut. Then we had the biggest shock - not only did Australia play the out-of-form spin bowler Nathan Lyon (in spite of fellow spinner Tahir not playing) but they also left in-form left arm fast bowler Mitchell Starc as 12th man.

By Adrian Meredith

VICTORIA, Australia (TheSportsNEXT) September 28, 2012: All Time World XIs are often discussed. Since T20s are pretty new, and ODIs themselves are only 40 years old, for the purposes of this analysis, I am talking primarily about test matches, at least for people who played before the other two formats had international status.

Why did South Africa defeat England?

By Adrian Meredith

VICTORIA, Australia (TheSportsNext) July, 24, 2012: South Africa shocked England, who are ranked 1 versus South Africa, who were just downgraded to 3, at home in England! They didn't just lose, but they were beaten by an innings! So how did this happen?

Mark Boucher's absence inspires South Africa
AB de Villiers is actually a specialist wicket keeper who, early in his career, dreamed of taking over from Mark Boucher in the team. He is nowhere as good as Boucher as a keeper but he is nonetheless a specialist keeper so him playing didn't hurt too much. It also meant extra batsmen (not that they needed it) so the team overall wasn't missing too much. Boucher missing, though, certainly inspired Jacques Kallis, probably also A B de Villiers but it may have inspired the whole team.
