London2012: 9 athletes suspended for doping

By Alexia Krause

MONACO (TheSportsNext) July 25, 2012: The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) on Wednesday suspended nine track and field athletes from participation in the London 2012 for their positive dope tests.

Three out of these nine athletes were caught in retests of samples taken during the last year’s world championships in Daegu, South Korea.

The IAAF said that six of the nine suspended athletes were caught in the biological passport tests. It is important to mention here that the biological passport tests capture changes in an athlete’s blood profile.

As per details, the International Association of Athletics Federations has suspended eight athletes for a period of two years while the other athlete has been banned for four years.

The IAAF also characterized the doping cases as sophisticated doping as one case involved human growth hormone while two were related to synthetic testosterone.

With the suspension orders, IAAF President Lamine Diack made it clear that the authorities will "do everything in our power to eradicate cheating."
