(TheSportsNext) July 29, 2012: The Great Britain’s biggest gold medal hope,
Rebecca Adlington witnessed a mixed first day at the London2012 on Sunday when
she only managed to qualify into the final of the women’s 400 meters freestyle
at the Aquatics Center.
Rebecca Adlington found huge support at the Aquatics Center
which cheered for her as soon as she completed her heat in 4:05.75, the fastest
time in her heat. However, they were made to bite their nails later on after
swimmers competing in the other two heats started posting better times and in
the end Rebecca Adlington only managed to qualify into the finals as the eighth
and slowest qualifier.
Talking to reporters after getting qualified as the slowest
swimmer in the finals of London 2012, Rebecca Adlington said, "It felt faster. You just
don't know being in the first (seeded) heat. I had no option, I just had to go
for it."
Rebecca Adlington was not the only top swimmer who was made
to face the music by the other qualifiers as the reigning world champion and
world record holder swimmer from Italy Federica Pellegrini also found her on
the edge of the seat as she finished seventh overall in the end.
Federica Pellegrini said, "The race is tonight. It's
not as if I've had great results in the morning this year. Now we'll see this
evening”.
The fastest qualifier into the final at London 2012 for Camille Muffatt of
France who finished with 4:03.29, followed by Allison Schmitt of United States,
who told local media, “I am excited to have a lane for tonight. It's a fast
meet all around”.
