Pak-India cricket series: Sania Mirza to support Team India

By Bipin Dani

MUMBAI (TheSportsNext) July 18, 2012: Sania Mirza will support the Team India when the bilateral series between the two nations will resume in December this year, her father Irfan Mirza told TheSportsNext on Tuesday.

Speaking exclusively over telephone from Hyderabad on Tuesday morning, he said, "Of course our family will support the Indian team. Even my daughter, Sania will also support the Team India. She was born in India and we will support Dhonis, Sehwags and Tendulkars".

"Yes, but", adding further, he says, "Sania will support her husband if he is selected to play for Pakistan".

Indian tennis star Sania Mirza got married to former Pakistani captain, Shoaib Malik in April 2010. The wedding was held in Hyderabad, India, also followed by a ceremony in Sialkot, Pakistan and a valima ceremony in Lahore, Pakistan.

The publicity and the online attention the wedding received made Sania Mirza the most searched woman tennis player and most searched Indian sportsperson in the year 2010, according to Google Trends.

Shoaib Malik's family has been staying in Pakistan, but the couple has not settled there. "Sania had also been to Pakistan once after that", the father added. "There was no tennis tournament in Pakistan but once I accompanied her when Shoaib was playing in Pakistan", the father added.

Irfan Mirza was not willing to comment on the BCCI's decision to resume ties between the two countries. "If the decision is taken by the Board to restore connections after five years, I don't want to say anything. It is between the Indian government and the board officials to come at the conclusion. We are sport loving people and don't interfere in politicians' decision", he signed off.

Sania Mirza is in the United States to participate in the WTA Premier event.
