MLB: Miguel Cabrera becomes first triple-crown-winner in 45 years

By Raleigh McPherson

KANSAS CITY, Missouri, United States (TheSportsNEXT) October 4, 2012: Miguel Cabrera of Detroit Tigers rewrote history books on Wednesday night when he became only the first MLB player to win Triple Crown since 1967.

With this achievement, Miguel Cabrera has joined the likes of Mickey Mantle, Ted Williams, and Lou Gehrig in the list of MLB Triple Crown winners.

The last time when such a feat was achieved by any MLB player was 45 years ago when Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski had won the MLB Triple Crown in 1967.

Miguel Cabrera had to wait for the milestone until New York Yankees pinch hit for Curtis Granderson in their MLB game against the Boston Red Sox where Granderson homered twice to finish with 43 for the MLB 2012 season.

Miguel Carbera ended with 44 home runs, just one more than Curtis Granderson and Rangers’ Josh Hamilton who had to content with the figure of 43 for the season.

The Wednesday night didn’t start well for Miguel Cabrera as he went 0 for 2 against the Royals but when he left for the dugout in the fourth inning the crowd went berserk and offered him a standing ovation.

After yet another super show on Wednesday, Miguel Cabrera finished the MLB Regular Season with a .330 average, four points better than the Angels' Mike Trout, his biggest competition for MVP. Miguel Cabrera was also the runaway leader with 139 RBIs.
