September 4, 2012: The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced Tuesday
that it has banned former cricketer Shariful Haque from cricket indefinitely
after finding him guilty of spot-fixing.
Talking to a news conference in Dhaka, BCB President Mustafa
Kamal said, "The allegation made against the player has been
substantiated. We have decided to ban him from all cricketing activities until
further notice. We will keep watching him and only if we are satisfied will his
ban be lifted."
The BCB had conducted an inquiry following an allegation by
former skipper Mashrafe Mortaza that Shariful Haque had offered him to do
spot-fixing before the inaugural Bangladesh Premier League tournament in
February.
Mashrafe Mortaza had reported to his cricket board that
Shariful Haque had offered him 15-20 percent share of the earnings from spot
betting which was in return for the inside information about whether he would
be part of the team in certain matches and even whether he would be wearing
sunglasses.
Shariful Haque, who was part of the squad in 1994 ICC Trophy
in Kenya, represented Bangladesh in one ODI against India in 1998 and is the
first cricketer in the country to get penalized for the scourge of spot-fixing.
