MUMBAI (TheSportsNext
Exclusive) August 7, 2012: Nearly one month after the freak injury to his
left eye, the 36-year-old South African wickekeeper Mark Boucher will make
first public appearance on Wednesday. This was revealed by his personal
physician Peter Sandell.
"Boucher will appear before the media at Sahara Park
Newlands on Wednesday at 1.30 and wil answer all queries", he said from
Cape Town. The doctor refused to identify the eye surgeon. "The eye
specialist is unlikely to be at the press meet but all medical related queries
will be answered by me", he added.
According to the sources, Boucher is "much better"
and likely to regain 'good vision" than thought at the time of the
accident. "Doctos are performing surgeries at regular intervals and his
full rehabilitation may take a few more months", the source added.
Last month Mark Boucher had suffered a serious eye injury,
after being struck on his left eye by a bail on the opening day of South
Africa’s tour match against Somerset at Taunton. At the time of keeping wickets
behind stumps, he was not wearing a protective helmet nor glasses. "The
eye injury may have occurred also due to the impact of the ball. The doctors
don't believe that the impact of hitting of bail can have such a serious
injury", the source added.
Boucher has retired from the game as and has the most number
of overall dismissals in international cricket for a wicketkeeper (999—one of
these as an outfielder). "Obviously, he is disappointed on not reaching
1000, but it was not in his hands", his manager, Brendon Bigara said from
Cape Town.
"Everything is not lost for him", Saba Karim, the
other Indian wicketkeeper, who too had too retire from the game due to the
similar injury, said from Delhi. "There are various options like coaching,
commentary etc. are available and am sure, Boucher will remain with the game.
He is a legend", Saba Karim said.
