KARACHI:
Pakistan’s former captain and cricket coach Waqar Younis believes that Pakistan
should rely on young fast bowlers in all formats of the game if they want to
keep their upward progress in international cricket.
While talking to a cricket website the other day, Waqar
Younis, who resigned from his post as Pakistan cricket coach citing health
problems, said that the time was now to include young players in the national
cricket team and if the cricket authorities don’t give them the chance now then
it would be a very big loss for Pakistan.
He stated, “There is enough fast bowling talent in Pakistan
and the selectors should utilise the talent and give those youngsters an
opportunity instead of ignoring them”.
Talking about fast bowler Mohammad Sami, the former coach
said, “There are several young fast bowlers pushing the likes of Mohammad Sami
for a place. I don’t want to single any youngsters out and put more pressure on
them but the likes of Sami need to look over their shoulder.”
Waqar Younis has praise for the young fast bowler Junaid
Khan who impressed everyone with his bowling talent in the recently concluded
series against Sri Lanka. He said, “It was great to see Junaid bowling so well
against a powerful Sri Lankan batting line up. The main reason why Junaid was
successful and Umar Gul and Mohammad Sami struggled was that Junaid was bowling
the right length for those wickets.”
“Junaid’s a real talent, an up and coming bowler who will
only get better if he is looked after properly,” Waqar added.
