PCB not interested but ECB wants Saqlain Mushtaq

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) August 2, 2012: Saqlain Mushtaq, the creator of doosra and teesra delivery in cricket, is in high demand with the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) that extended the former Pakistani off-spinner’s contract till 2014.

Saqlain Mushtaq has been working with the ECB for around four years and his services were regarded high by the ECB officials and after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) showed no interest in pouncing on his abilities as coach, the England cricket board took no time in offering him a contract extension.

Saqlain Mushtaq told reporters on Wednesday, ”The ECB has extended my contract till 2014 as their spin bowling consultant and I will be rejoining the England team for the ICC T20 World Cup in Sri Lanka”.

Saqlain Mushtaq’s name emerged as one of the top contenders for the Pakistan bowling coach job but PCB chairman Chaudhry Zaka Ashraf decided against having the charismatic off-spinner as national team’s bowling coach.

Saqlain Mushtaq, very rightly, demanded a three-year contract and put a condition of not getting dismissed before expiration of his contract during his meeting with the PCB chief but Zaka Ashraf never contacted him again.

However, Saqlain Mushtaq was pretty happy with the ECB’s offer as he said, "The PCB might not want to recognize my qualifications and experience but the ECB has extended my contract”.

Representing Pakistan in Test cricket, Saqlain Mushtaq captured 185 wickets from 52 Test matches besides grabbing 166 wickets from 144 One Day International matches during a 13-year-long career ranging from 1990-2003.

Saqlain Mushtaq was equally lethal in the England county cricket championships taking 1407 wickets from 309 first class matches at strike rate of 25.67 while representing Sussex, Surrey, and Somerset.
