(TheSportsNext) August 24, 2012: Chief Selector at Pakistan Cricket Board
(PCB), Iqbal Qasim, was shocked over Pakistan junior team's performance in the
ICC Under19 World Cup currently in progress in Australian cities of Townsville
and Brisbane.
"I am really surprised and deeply disappointed with the
showing of the junior lot," he said in an interview when approached for
his reaction on Friday.
"Pakistan team was among the favorites to regain the
title after winning it twice," he commented.
Babar Azam's team finished worst-ever eighth after losing
their 7th/9th place playoff to Bangladesh by five wickets. Pakistan's previous
worst position was 4th. "I think after a narrow defeat to India in the
quarter-finals, team lost the way," he said. They got some kind of mental
bloke after losing to India in nail-biting finish," he added.
"Three successive defeats against India, West Indies
and now Bangladesh by Pakistan was just unbelievable," he observed.
"I think selectors, picked the best possible lot and expected them to do
well in Australia. But it went other way around," he remarked.
However, he said, they are young lot and must have learnt
from their mistakes. "Like anybody else, Pakistan cricket supporters, the
selectors were shocked with such performances from the boys," he
concluded.
