London2012: Pakistan to face Spain in Hockey today

KARACHI (TheSportsNext) July 30, 2012: The three times gold medalist Pakistan hockey team will start their 2012 gold medal hunt in London Olympics 2012 with their first match against European giant Spain today at Riverbank Arena, London.  

The world record holder penalty corner specialist and pride of Pakistan Sohail Abbas will lead the Pakistan hockey team in the London Olympics. Pakistan hockey team had very unimpressive warm-up matches where they lost to Belgium by 2-0 and they were humiliated by Netherlands with 5-1.



Pakistan hockey team is placed in Group A where they will meet Argentine, Australia, Spain, South Africa and host Great Britain. The umpires for today’s match are Taylor Simon and Iggo Nigel.

This will be the ninth competition between Pakistan and Spain in Olympics. Pakistan have won four in last eight encounters in Olympics between two teams while Spain were the winner on two occasions. The matches were ended a draw on two occasions. Pakistan scored 18 goals against Spain in eight matches while Spain managed to score 12 goals on Pakistan.

In other matches of Group A, Australia will play against South Africa while host Great Britain will meet Argentine. In Group B matches, India will take on Netherlands, South Korea will play against New Zealand.
