Intikhab given task to make Qadir ink PCB contract

By Tasawwar Abbas

LAHORE (TheSportsNext) July 24, 2012: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has handed a task to ‘former cricket coach and manager Intikhab Alam to convince a furious Abdul Qadir and make him sign the contract.

Former leg-spin bowler Abdul Qadir, who is renowned for his short temper, lost his nerves when the PCB offered him a short contract extension.

The PCB had appointed Abdul Qadir, who has 236 Test scalps and 132 One-Day wickets to his name, as chief coordinator of club cricket in Pakistan last year besides giving him the job of coaching and nurturing the young talent. The former leg-spinner recently supervised the trials throughout the country along with his former teammates Ijaz Ahmed (batting and fielding) and Sarfraz Nawaz (fast bowling). The PCB recently offered Abdul Qadir a three-month contract extension which infuriated the legendary leg-spin bowler.

It is important to mention that Abdul Qadir’s coaching contract has expired on June 30, 2012.

The local media quoted sources as saying, “The board later tried to pacify the leg-spinner by extending his contract to a year but he has refused to relent and return to duty. Qadir became upset when he learnt that after his contract expired on June 30, he was given only a three-month extension. Later the board offered him a one-year deal but he is demanding a three-year one as he says this is the period required to restructure club cricket”.

Sources further stated, “Intikhab Alam has been trying to convince Abdul Qadir to accept the one-year contract but the latter has refused to even come to the PCB headquarters at the Gaddafi Stadium.”
